Building a Sustainable Legacy for the Future
Carbon reduction is part of how Associated Asphalt plans,
designs and delivers infrastructure.
We focus on materials, methods and technology that reduce emissions, improve efficiency and support long-term asset performance across live, operational environments.

We take our environmental responsibility seriously, making proactive decisions to adopt new technology and reduce our footprint across every project.
- Understanding embodied carbon
Understanding carbon in our work
Carbon is generated across every stage of surfacing and infrastructure delivery — from materials and transport to plant, energy use and site operations. For Associated Asphalt, understanding this full picture allows us to focus effort where it delivers the greatest reduction.
- Scope 1
Direct emissions from our owned plant, vehicles and site equipment.
- Scope 2
Indirect emissions from electricity and energy used across depots, offices and facilities.
- Scope 3
Emissions linked to materials, haulage, waste and our wider supply chain — the largest source of carbon in our work.
We use this understanding to guide material choices, delivery planning and operational improvements, while continuing to improve the accuracy and depth of our carbon data.

- How to reduce embodied carbon?
A structured hierarchy: avoid, substitute and improve
Reducing embodied carbon starts with early decisions. We use a clear hierarchy to guide choices across design, materials and delivery, focusing effort where it has the greatest impact.
This approach is applied in practice through material selection, cleaner transport and the use of bio based alternatives across projects.
Avoid
Reduce carbon at source through efficient design, programme planning and material optimisation.
Substitute
Use lower binder asphalt, recycled content and alternative materials where they maintain performance and durability.
Improve
Where materials and methods are fixed, focus on cleaner transport, improved logistics and practical on site efficiencies.
- Technology and innovation
Technology and innovation in practice
We invest in proven innovation that delivers measurable carbon savings on live schemes.
Warm-mix asphalt
Lower production temperatures reduce fuel use and emissions while supporting programme efficiency.
Fuel efficiency technologies
Additives and plant optimisation reduce diesel consumption and improve engine performance.
Thermal repair systems
Targeted repairs reduce material use, disruption and whole-life carbon impact.

- Targets and measurement
Measuring progress with transparency
Our carbon reduction commitments are supported by clear targets and structured monitoring.
- 50% reduction in emissions per £m turnover by 2030
- 90% reduction by 2035
- Net zero carbon by 2040
Carbon data is captured across materials, transport and operations to support reporting, decision-making and continuous improvement.
- Standards and governance
Standards that support delivery
Our carbon reduction approach is underpinned by recognised systems and governance.
These frameworks ensure carbon reduction is embedded into planning, procurement and delivery.
